The Miss Universe Betting Favorites

Of the 90 official contestants, the following ladies are considered the odds on favorites to win the 2019 Miss Universe competition:

Miss Thailand Paweensuda Saetan-Drouin

Saetan-Drouin comes into the competition as the overall betting favorite. She was raised in Canada and moved to Thailand when she was younger. The 26-year old model stands a half inch under six feet tall and has racked up plenty of accolades on the pageant scene.

Paweensuda has finished high in several competitions including a win of Miss Thailand Earth 2017 and this year’s Miss Universe Thailand 2019. In that contest, she won several categories like Best Swimsuit and Perfect Poses. Saetan-Drouin comes in with a lot of momentum and fanfare.

Thailand hasn’t won this competition since 1988 when Porntip Nakhirunkanok took the crown. Thailand also won in 1965 giving them two all-time victories.

Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados

Miss Universe 2013 Betting Odds

Ganados is a 23-year old pageant winner and fashion model that has taken her country by storm. She was just crowned Miss Universe Philippines after taking home two categories in that contest: Best in Long Gown and Miss Photogenic.

In addition to her beauty, Ganados is also an advocate for elderly care after being raised by her grandparents.

Unfortunately for Gazini, she has history working against her. There’s only ever been one occasion where a country has won consecutive Miss Universe competitions. Last year, Catriona Gray, from the Philippines, won the Miss Universe competition.

Can the Philippines defy history and make it two wins in a row?

The Philippines have won two of the last four Miss Universe competitions and have four overall victories, but winning two in a row is going to be tough.

Miss Brazil Julia Horta

The 25-year old Brazilian model Julia Horta has been competing in top beauty pageants for over five years now. She’s finished in the top four for some of Brazil’s top competitions, but it wasn’t until this year’s Miss Brazil 2019 that she won a major contest.

At 5’8, Horta is shorter than some of her top competition. However, she has stood tall among the betting competition as she’s considered one of the favorites.

Brazil has two all-time wins in this contest, but hasn’t won since 1968. With 50 years of futility, the country is putting their hopes in Horta.

Miss Brazil Julia Horta (+600)

Miss El Salvador Zuleika Soler

The 25-year old Zuleika Soler scored her first big pageant win in 2016 when she claimed the title of Miss El Salvador Latina 2016. However, Soler didn’t get her next big win until she claimed this year’s title of Miss Universe El Salvador which earned her the right to represent the country in the Miss Universe competition.

Like with Ganados for the Philippines, Soler has history working against her as well. Her country has never won this major beauty competition.

At 5’7, she will be one of the shorter contestants. However, her country is hoping she can stand taller than the rest of the competition and bring back the first ever Miss Universe crown.

Miss Universe 2013 Betting Odds

Miss Portugal Sylvie Silva

At just 20 years old, Silva is one of the youngest contestants in the Miss Universe competition. But, don’t let her age or beauty fool you. At 5’9, the Miss Universe Portugal 2019 also has brains behind all of that beauty as she’s pursuing a career in landscape architecture.

Silva quickly endeared herself to her fellow countrymen and countrywomen through her personality and the advocacy responsibilities of the crown. Unfortunately, she has a big hill to climb as Portugal has never won a Miss Universe competition before.

Miss Portugal Sylvie Silva (+600)

Miss Puerto Rico Madison Anderson

Madison Anderson Berrios is a 24-year old pageant winner standing at 5’10 inches tall. The American model has a Puerto Rican mother which allowed her to compete in the country’s beauty pageants.

She originally started competing in 2014 as a teenager and even took a hiatus for almost a few years before taking 2019 by storm. Anderson was a runner-up in Miss Florida USA 2019 and would go on to win the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2019 competition a few months later.

Although she finished runner up in the Miss Florida USA competition, which prevented her from entering the Miss USA pageant, she has a shot at beating Miss USA this weekend in the Miss Universe contest.

Puerto Rico has won four Miss Universe competitions with the last one coming in 2006.

Miss United States Cheslie Kryst

Along with Miss Poland, Kryst is the oldest contestant in this competition. She’s also one of the shortest at just 5’6. Yet, don’t let any of that dissuade you and her chances.

Kryst is a very successful woman outside of beauty pageants as she has three degrees from two different universities, is a civil litigation attorney, runs a fashion, is active in volunteer work and aspires to become a clothing designer.

She started off her pageantry career as a teenager in high school and worked her way up the ladder. Eventually she competed in major North Carolina competitions and won Miss North Carolina 2019 and then Miss USA 2019. She’s the oldest winner in America’s top pageant.

The United States is tied with Venezuela for the most Miss Universe victories at seven apiece. However, the USA hasn’t won since 2012.

Miss United States Cheslie Kryst (+600)

Potential Miss Universe Betting Value

The following contestants offer betting value based on their current odds and media projections:

Miss Venezuela Thalia Olvino

They say that beauty pageant contestants is the second biggest export for Venezuela. And, whoever “they” are, happen to be correct. Venezuela has won more major international beauty competitions than any other country.

Venezuela has won seven Miss Universe crowns, six Miss World titles, six Miss International contests, and two Miss Earths.

The country’s reputation for winning, along with Thalia Olvino’s physical beauty and endearing personality make her a contestant to keep an eye on in Atlanta on Sunday.

Miss France Maeva Coucke

The 25-year old Maeva Coucke has international pageant experience which gives her a leg up on the competition. She won Miss France 2018 and represented the country in Miss World 2019 where she finished in the Top 12. However, she wasn’t supposed to be in this year’s Miss Universe competition.

Vaimalama Chaves, the 2018 Miss Tahiti and 2019 Miss France, was the first in line to represent the country for Miss Universe. However, she announced over the summer that she wasn’t going to compete in the major international competitions. So, Coucke got the nod for the Miss Universe competition.

For being a last minute substitute, I like Coucke to fly under the radar and crack the Top 12. From there, it’s anyone’s competition.

France last won the Miss Universe competition in 2016, which was the country’s second all-time victory.

Miss France Maeva Coucke (+900)

Miss Poland Olga Bulawa

This value pick is a shout-out to my son. When dropping him off at school today, I was talking to him about the Miss Universe competition. After explaining to him how the contest works, his first pick to win the entire competition was Miss Poland.

Not knowing anything about who was even representing the country, my son was confident that this country would win. He said if she didn’t win then it would be Miss Ireland who I will discuss further on.

After perusing the beauty pageant scene and the international celebrity buzz, Olga Bulawa is actually garnering some attention from pundits and fans who think she can crack the Top 5 and take a shot at winning the crown.

At 28 years old, Olga Bulawa is tied with Miss USA as the oldest competitors. Bulawa has a Masters degree in Law, is an avid traveler, hosts a TV show, and is a huge Harry Potter fan. Poland has never won a Miss Universe contest before.

Miss Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull

The 20-yeard old Australian moved to Jakarta to further her modeling and beauty pageant career. The move paid off as she won Miss Puteri Indonesia 2019 and will represent Indonesia in the Miss Universe contest.

Indonesia has never won a Miss Universe contest, but Australia has. Cull will look to make history this weekend. Of all the women previewed in this article, I believe Cull has the most natural beauty.

With the Miss Universe competition allowing Internet votes for one of its categories, Cull will get my vote. The winner of this category automatically moves on to the Top 20.

Miss Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull (+2500)

Possible Longshots to Win or Place High

The following contestants are considered longshots to potentially upstage the competition with a high placing or overall victory:

Miss Kenya Stacy Michuki

Michuki is the youngest contestant to have ever been crowned Miss Universe Kenya. At age 18, she’s also one of the youngest in the Miss Universe competition.

Michuki is a newcomer on the international scene, but she’s already turned a lot of heads and has received some buzz over her chances this weekend in Atlanta.

Michuki wants to become a world famous fashion model and to also be a role model for other kids in her country. She’s well on her way to accomplishing both. Kenya has never won the Miss Universe competition before, but Michuki could become the highest finisher of her country’s history in this pageant.

Miss Ireland Fionnghuala O’Reilly

As mentioned above, my son also picked Ireland as his backup choice for winning the Miss Universe competition. At just 12 years old, he certainly had no idea who was even representing the country. In fact, neither did I.

However, after perusing the international online beauty scene, I’ve come away with a newfound respect for Fionnghuala O’Reilly. The 25-year old is not only one of the most attractive women in the competition, but she’s also one of the smartest.

O’Reilly has a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering to go along with all of that beauty. She competed in the Miss District of Columbia USA 2018 competition and finished in the Top 5. However, her biggest win to date was this year’s Miss Universe Ireland 2019 where she wasn’t even a favorite.

Ireland has never won this competition before. However, if this year’s Miss Universe contest has multiple categories dealing with one’s intelligence, then O’Reilly certainly has a shot.

Miss Ireland Fionnghuala O’Reilly (+5500)

Miss Universe Prop Bets

In addition to the outright winner, online betting sites also have prop bets listed for the Miss Universe competitions. The following is a list of some of these props:

Where Will the Winner Be From?

  • Americas/Caribbean (+130)
  • Asia/Africa/Pacific (+170)
  • Europe (+200)

The Americas/Caribbean option is the favorite for this prop bet and not just because the competition is being held in the United States. There are a few major factors that tip the scales toward the Americas and Caribbean.

Since 2000, 11 of the last 18 winners have come from these regions. However, the last win for these regions was in 2014. Nevertheless, of the Top 15 betting favorites, nine of them are from the Americas and Caribbean:

  • North America – United States, Puerto Rico
  • Central America – El Salvador
  • South America – Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia, Costa Rica

Odds are that the Americas/Caribbean option will hit. Forget the Europe betting option as they’ve only won one Miss Universe since 2000. Although they have some solid options this year like Portugal, France and Poland, they’re the underdog for a reason.

I do like the value with Asia/Africa/Pacific. They’re coming in strong with Thailand and the Philippines being the top two betting favorites. Australia and my favorite Miss Indonesia is in the mix as well. This region has also won three of the last four Miss Universe competitions.

The smart bet is on the Americas and the value is with Asia/Africa/Pacific.

Miss Universe Prop: Americas/Caribbean (+130)

How Old Will the Winner Be?

  • Over 23.5 (-110)
  • Under 23.5 (-110)

Since 1953, after the first two competitions, every winner has been at least 18 years or older. The oldest competitor to win was 26 years old and that was done twice: Miss USA in 1997 and Miss Philippines in 2015.

College Football Betting Odds

The following is a breakdown of ages for the previous 67 Miss Universe competitions:

  • 17 years old: 2 times
  • 18 years old: 15 times
  • 19 years old: 11 times
  • 20 years old: 12 times
  • 21 years old: 5 times
  • 22 years old: 8 times
  • 23 years old: 5 times
  • 24 years old: 4 times
  • 25 years old: 3 times
  • 26 years old: 2 times

Despite the Under 23.5 winning 58 of the 67 competitions, the odds for the O/U are even. That means the Under 23.5 option offers a lot of value based on the math alone. The average age of a Miss Universe winner has been just over 21 years old.

For this year’s competition, we have 90 contestants broken down into the following age groups:

  • 18 years old: 5 contestants
  • 19 years old: 5 contestants
  • 20 years old: 12 contestants
  • 21 years old: 7 contestants
  • 22 years old: 6 contestants
  • 23 years old: 14 contestants
  • 24 years old: 13 contestants
  • 25 years old: 10 contestants
  • 26 years old: 12 contestants
  • 27 years old: 4 contestants
  • 28 years old: 2 contestant

This year, the ages are almost even as 49 contestants are 23 years old and under. That leaves 41 contestants over the age of 24.

Since 2010, there have been only four winners over the age of 24. Last year’s winner Catriona Gray was still just 23 years old. She was one month shy of her 24th birthday. Once again, the math is telling us that we should go with the Under.

Before we can safely make a prediction, we have to look at the ages of the betting favorites for this year’s competition:

  • Thailand (26)
  • Philippines (23)
  • Brazil (25)
  • El Salvador (25)
  • Portugal (20)
  • Puerto Rico (24)
  • United States (28)
  • Colombia (24)
  • Australia (27)
  • Chile (19)
  • Iceland (19)
  • Venezuela (20)
  • Bolivia (21)
  • Costa Rica (27)
  • France (25)

Of the Top 15 odds on favorites, nine of them are 24 years and older. The average age of the Top 15 is 23.53 years old.

Although Thailand is the favorite and the United States has a strong chance as well, I have to go with the Under here. There’s too much data to ignore. Plus, two of my favorites (Miss Indonesia and Miss Venezuela) are Under 23.5 years old.

How Tall Will the Winner Be?

  • Over 5’9″ (-110)
  • Under 5’9″ (-110)

Last year’s winner Catriona Gray of the Philippines was 5’10”. She was only the 16th contestant over 5’9” to win in the previous 67 Miss Universe competitions. In 45 competitions, the winner was under 5’9” and the other seven competitions saw winners exactly 5’9”.

The tallest winner ever was Amelia Vega from the Dominican Republic. She was 6’2” and won in 2003. The shortest winner ever was 5’4” and it happened twice as Miss Columbia won in 1958 and Miss Thailand won in 1965.

This year’s Miss Thailand, who is also the betting favorite, stands at five feet, eleven and a half inches tall. Of the Top 15 betting favorites, seven of them are Over 5’9”, seven are under 5’9” and one is exactly that height.

If you add my favorite Miss Indonesia to the mix, then you have eight favorites under 5’9”. This bet is a tough one, but I’m leaning toward the Under.

Miss Universe Prop: Under 5’9″ (-110)

Will Steve Harvey Announce the Wrong Winner?

  • Yes (+5000)

Are we still talking about this? Steve Harvey messed up back in 2015 and it’s like the man can never live it down. Yet, he didn’t mess up the last three years in a row and I see no reason to think he will now.

And, the 2019 Miss Universe Winner Is…

Last year, I successfully picked the winner of the 2018 Miss Universe contest. However, this year’s field of beauty contestants is a lot harder than the 2018 competition.

With that in mind, my Top 6 picks are:

Universe

Miss Universe 2013 Betting Odds Against

  • Miss Thailand
  • Miss Philippines
  • Miss USA
  • Miss Venezuela
  • Miss Indonesia
  • Miss Costa Rica

From there, I believe we can eliminate Miss Philippines since the country won last year and only one time in the history of this competition has a country won two Miss Universe contests in a row.

I think we can also eliminate both Miss USA (28) and Miss Costa Rica (27) as they’re over 26 years old and no woman has ever won this competition at 27 or 28 years old. That’s also why I’m not going with my son’s pick of Miss Poland because she’s also 28.

That leaves us with Miss Venezuela, Miss Thailand and Miss Indonesia.

Venezuela has won three of the last 11 Miss Universe competitions and is definitely a value pick. Miss Indonesia has become my favorite of the field, but might too much of a longshot for some. So, the smart play here is to go with Miss Thailand who seems to have all of the hype heading into the beauty pageant.
